The aim of this research is to determine the nurses’ perceptions about discrimination in the work environment and patient care practices. The data of the descriptive study has been obtained from 291 nurses who were working in a private and a public university hospital located in the European region of Istanbul and were selected by convenience sampling method. The data have been collected with a questionnaire form consisting of 39 expressions in a 5-point Likert type, created by the researcher. The cut-point was taken as 2.00 points and represented the point of indecision. It has been interpreted that the expressions above this score are perceived as high level of discrimination and the statements below are perceived as low level of discrimination. Among the statements with the highest average score perceived as discrimination about patient care, the first three statements have been found as, “Nurses; think that non-companion patients increase nurses' workload (mean=2.49), pay more attention to VIP patients (mean=2.42), see the care of bedridden patients as an increase in workload (mean=2.36)”. Among the statements with the highest average score perceived as discrimination in working environment, the first three statements have been found as, “The fact that doctors have a higher level of work sanction power on working staff than nurses (mean=2.64), Managers not being objective while evaluating the performance of employees (mean=2.50) and Cigarette smoker nurses using more rest periods during working hours (mean=2.45)”. Besides, it has been determined that the average values of discrimination perception differ according to some demographic characteristics of the nurses.
