Carbon Footprint in Sport Management: A Comparative Analysis of Sustainability Strategies and Organizational Transformation
Öz
This research aims to reveal the effects of carbon emissions in sports competitions from the perspective of sports management sciences and to reveal what strategies should be put forward for a sustainable structure through the literature. When the main sources of high carbon emissions in the sports sector are examined, travel is the main source, while the use of non-renewable energy, the construction of the facilities of sports clubs, as well as the amount of waste generated and its evaluation come to the fore. In this research based on a literature review, examples from Poland, Germany, Austria and Turkey are given by reviewing scientific research and comparative analyzes are presented. The findings of the research show that sports clubs' away transportation accounts for up to 70% of their carbon emissions, while the use of individual vehicles instead of public transportation also increases the emission burden, and energy consumption is also an important factor in carbon-based emissions. However, while some European clubs have achieved their carbon neutrality targets, most organizations are still managing their carbon emission strategies through green washing strategies. In conclusion, in order to reduce carbon emissions in the field of sports management sciences, not only environmental factors but also corporate responsibilities need to be managed correctly. While it is important for sports organizations to structure their corporate cultures based on renewable energy sources and targeting low carbon, it is also recommended that they report transparently and implement decision mechanisms supported by artificial intelligence while managing processes.
