Teacher’s Interpersonal Self-Efficacy and Their Level of Informal Communication: A Quantitative Study
Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the perception of teacher’s interpersonal self-efficacy and their level of informal communication and to describe the relation between these by examining them according to some demographic variables.
Design & Methodology: In the study associational survey model was used and the data was collected via “Informal Communication in Schools Scale” and “Teacher’s Interpersonal Self-efficacy Scale” were analyzed with the help of SPSS. Sample consists of 450 teachers who worked at Tokat central district in 2015-2016 academic year and were chosen with proportionate stratified sampling.
Findings: As a result of the analyses, the following findings were determined: teachers had high levels of interpersonal self-efficacy and informal communication; a weak and positive relationship between interpersonal self-efficacy perceptions and informal communication was determined; and the interpersonal self-efficacy perceptions of teachers significantly predicted their informal communication. When qualitative and quantitative research results are evaluated together it is determined that their results support each other.
Implications & Suggestions: According to study results it can be advised for teachers; to be motivating and understanding towards students, to be helpful in their relationships with their colleagues, to share information, experience and responsibilities with them, to organize activities, celebrations etc. to get to know each other better and to let off steam. It can be advised for administrators to be understanding, solution oriented, supportive and objective towards teachers.
