Learners’ Views on the Online Application Used for Learning English Vocabulary: Quizlet

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of Quizlet as an online digital vocabulary learning tool. The data were collected from 34 fifth grade English language learners in a secondary school in Karesi district of Balıkesir province. In this qualitative study, learners’ views on the Quizlet programme were obtained through semi-structured interviews. Descriptive analysis method was used to analyse the data. As a result of the analyses, it was seen that the views on the use of Quizlet application were positive. It is recommended that digital vocabulary learning tools should be used as a learner-oriented and useful method in foreign language teaching and should be disseminated in teaching environments.

Öz
Bu çalışma, çevrimiçi dijital kelime öğrenme aracı olarak kullanılan Quizlet'in etkililiğini araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Veriler, Balıkesir ili Karesi ilçesinde bulunan bir ortaokulda İngilizce dilini öğrenen 34 beşinci sınıf öğrencisinden toplanmıştır. Bu nitel çalışmada yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler yoluyla Quizlet programına dair öğrenen görüşleri alınmıştır. Verilerin analizinde betimsel analiz yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Yapılan analizler sonucunda, Quizlet uygulamasının kullanımına yönelik görüşlerin olumlu olduğu görülmüştür. Dijital kelime öğrenme araçlarının yabancı dil öğretiminde öğrenen odaklı ve işe yarar bir yöntem olarak kullanılması ve öğretim ortamlarında yaygınlaştırılması önerilmektedir.
