The Nexus Between Education Investments and Local Economic Growth in Turkey: Regional Dynamic Panel Causality Analysis

Öz

This study examines the nexus between education investments and economic growth in Turkey. Although there are many studies examine the nexus between education investments and economic growth at the country level, the local level examines are very limited. Therefore in this study the nexus between education investments and economic growth is tested by Dynamic Panel Causality Analysis on Turkey’s provinces for the 2004-2014 period. According to the findings of this study, there is a bidirectional causal nexus between education investments and economic growth in the whole provinces. At the same time, the nexus and direction of nexus between education investments and regional economic growth being differentiated when provinces are divided into different subgroup based on socio-economic development levels.

Türkiye’de Eğitim Yatırımları ile Yerel Ekonomik Büyüme Arasındaki İlişki: Bölgesel Dinamik Panel Nedensellik Analizleri

Öz

Bu çalışma Türkiye’de eğitim yatırımları ile ekonomik büyüme arasındaki ilişkiyi araştırmaktadır. Literatür incelendiğinde eğitim yatırımları ile ekonomik büyüme arasındaki ilişkiyi araştıran çalışmaların genel olarak ülke düzeyinde olduğu, yerel ve bölgesel düzeyde olan çalışmaların ise oldukça sınırlı olduğu göze çarpmaktadır. Bu çalışmada ise eğitim yatırımları ile ekonomik büyüme arasındaki ilişki Türkiye’nin illeri üzerine Dinamik Panel Nedensellik Analizi ile 2004-2014 dönemi için test edilmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda elde edilen bulgulara göre tüm illerde eğitim yatırımları ile ekonomik büyüme arasında çift yönlü bir nedensellik ilişkisi bulunmaktadır. Aynı zamanda iller sosyo-ekonomik gelişmişlik düzeylerine göre farklı alt gruplara ayrıldığında eğitim yatırımları ile bölgesel ekonomik büyüme arasındaki nedensellik ilişkisi ve ilişkinin yönü farklılaşmaktadır.
