Civilization is presented as a singular phenomenon
that the societies should reach by using
the concepts of ‘‘civilization’’ and the ‘‘process of civilizing’’. It is an
inevitable fact that this would have some social effects. It is also possible
to see this effect in the Ottoman modernization movement. The reflection of
this movement can be best seen in Ahmet Cevdet Pasha’s works. At this point;
understanding the opinions of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha will help us to understand the
relationship between Ottoman modernization and the civilization. In this work;
the importance of Ahmet Cevdet Pasha within the Ottoman Modernization in the
context of his understanding of modernization will be analyzed. As a result; we will try to explain that the
civilization is a social case but not an ideal that should be reached and not a
singular phenomenon but rather a process which is transitive and interaction
with other nations and geographies.
