Comparative Analysis of Level Set and SIMP Methods for Topology Optimization of a Cast Iron Hydraulic Valve Plate

Öz

Driven by the increasing demand for lightweight and high-efficiency components, this study compares SIMP and Level Set topology optimization methods for a cast iron hydraulic valve endplate. Both approaches achieved approximately a 35% mass reduction while preserving mechanical strength. However, the Level Set method proved computationally superior, requiring fewer iterations to yield smooth, cast-ready geometries. Although SIMP offered stable convergence, it necessitated additional geometric refinement to ensure manufacturability. These findings outline the relative advantages of each method in fulfilling modern structural optimization requirements.
