Interior Design of New Buildings within Historic Environments: The Case of Kars 1924 Hotel

The construction of new buildings within a historical environment presents a design challenge that requires establishing a cultural, functional and above all an aesthetic balance between the present and the values of the past. Interior design is the primary domain in which the harmony of the building with its surroundings and the quality of user experience are shaped, and it must respond to the expectations of contemporary life. This article analyzes the case of Hotel 1924, a newly constructed building situated within the historical urban fabric of Kars, using qualitative research methods. The interior of the new building in the historical context is examined through specific design criteria, and its relationship with the surrounding environment is evaluated. This relationship is assessed through criteria such as spatial organization, structural system, building materials, mechanical and electrical systems, scale, color, acoustics, furnishing, lighting, vista, architectural components, interior and exterior shell continuity and contextual integration. The study aims to provide an opportunity to discuss how contemporary buildings can exist within historical settings and to offer a broad perspective as a reference for structures that will be built in such environments. Hotel 1924 is presented as an example of new building design in a historical context by offering its users an aesthetic and functional experience while maintaining a respectful approach to the past.

Tarihi Çevrede Yeni Yapı İç Mekân Tasarımı: Kars 1924 Otel Örneği

Öz

Tarihsel çevrede yeni yapılan inşası, o gün ile tarihin değerleri arasında kültürel, işlevsel ve en önemlisi estetik bir denge kurmayı gerektiren bir tasarım problemidir. Özellikle iç mekân tasarımı, yapının bulunduğu çevreyle uyumunu ve kullanıcı deneyimini belirleyen en önemli alan olup, çağdaş yaşamın beklentilerine cevap vermelidir. Bu makale, nitel araştırma yöntemlerine dayanarak Kars’ın kent merkezinde tarihi doku içinde yeni bir yapı olarak inşa edilmiş “Otel 1924” örneğini analiz etmiştir. Tarihi çevrede yeni yapının iç mekânı, tasarım ölçütleri üzerinden incelenmiş; yapının çevresiyle kurduğu ilişki değerlendirilmiştir. Yapının çevresiyle kurduğu ilişki; mekânsal organizasyon, taşıyıcı sistem, yapı malzemeleri, mekanik ve elektrikli sistemler, ölçek, renk, akustik, tefriş, aydınlatma, vista, donatı elemanları, iç-dış kabuk ilişkisi ve bağlam ölçütleri üzerinden değerlendirilmiştir. Bu çalışmayla çağdaş yapıların tarihi dokuda var olma biçimini tartışma imkânı sunulmuş ve tarihi çevrelerde inşa edilecek yapılara geniş bir bakış açısıyla referans sağlanması hedeflenmiştir. Otel 1924, geçmişe saygılı bir yaklaşımla birlikte kullanıcısına estetik ve işlevsel bir deneyim sunarak, tarihi çevrede yeni yapı tasarımının bir örneği olarak ortaya konmuştur.
