Öz
Chase F. Robinson’un Müslümanlarda Tarihyazımı adıyla Türkçeye tercüme edilen eseri, Müslüman tarihçiliğini kurumsal, ilmî ve siyasal bağlamlar içinde inceleyen bütüncül bir çerçeve sunar. Bu çerçeve İslam tarih yazımının mahiyetini, usullerini ve entelektüel arka planını doğru biçimde kavramanın, klasik literatürü yorumlama ve modern tarihçilik tartışmalarını değerlendirme bakımından neden temel bir gereklilik olduğunu açık biçimde göstermektedir. Yazar çalışmasında, Müslümanların geçmişi kayda geçirme faaliyetini metin telifiyle sınırlı bir uğraş olarak görmemektedir. Bunu belirli bir bilgi telakkisi, rivayet ve aktarım usulleri ile şekillenen bütüncül bir tarih tasavvurunun tezahürü olarak değerlendirir. Bu doğrultuda erken dönem siyer ve megâzî literatüründen başlayarak umûmî tarih eserlerine uzanan süreklilik içinde teşekkül eden tarih anlayışının ana unsurlarını aktarma gayreti içindedir. Bununla birlikte Robinson’un eserinde hâkim olan dil ve yaklaşımda Müslümanların tecrübe ettiği hadiselerin, mümkün mertebe ölçülü ve ilmî bir dikkatle ele alınmaya çalışıldığı görülmektedir. Yazarın çalışmasını dikkate değer kılan hususlardan biri de yerleşik kabullerin ve tekrara dayalı yaklaşımların dışına çıkarak İslam tarihçiliğini farklı açılardan yeniden değerlendirmeye imkân tanımasıdır. Bu değerlendirme yazısının temel konusu ise, Robinson’un eserini Türkçe literatüre yeni kazandırılmış olması vesilesiyle tanıtmak, metodolojik çerçevesini tahlil etmek ve İslam tarihçiliğinin birikimi içindeki konumunu izah etmektir. Bu bağlamda eser, genel tarih metodolojisi, medeniyet merkezli tarih anlatımları ve kronolojik tasnif yaklaşımı gibi farklı tarih yazımı gelenekleriyle mukayeseli biçimde ele alınmıştır. Robinson’un rivayetleri incelemeye yönelik yaklaşımı, kaynak eleştirisi ve sosyopolitik arka plan vurgusu dikkate alınarak bir inceleme yapılmıştır. İlaveten bu değerlendirmede, Robinson’un İslam tarih yazımını tek boyutlu bir rivayet aktarımı olarak nitelemeyen anlayışı bilhassa vurgulanmıştır. Bunun yanı sıra metinde yer yer görülen genelleyici tespitler de eleştirel bir dikkatle irdelenmiştir. Böylece değerlendirme metni, hem söz konusu eserin ilmî katkısını tespit etmeyi hem de İslam tarih yazımı alanındaki metodolojik tartışmalara mütevazı bir katkı sunmayı amaçlamaktadır.

Öz
Chase F. Robinson’s work, translated into Turkish under the title Müslümanlarda Tarihyazımı, offers a comprehensive framework for examining Muslim historiography within its institutional, scholarly, and political contexts. This framework clearly demonstrates why a proper understanding of the nature, meth-ods, and intellectual background of Islamic historiography constitutes a fundamental necessity both for interpreting the classical literature and for evaluating debates in modern historiography. In his study, the author does not regard Muslims’ activity of recording the past as an undertaking confined merely to the composition of texts. Rather, he considers it to be the manifestation of an integrated conception of history shaped by a particular understanding of knowledge, together with methods of transmission and narration. In this respect, he seeks to present the principal elements of the historical understanding that took shape in a continuum extending from the early sīra and maghāzī literature to universal historical works. At the same time, it can be observed that the language and manner prevailing in Robinson’s work aim to address the events experienced by Muslims, as far as possible, with restraint and scholarly care. One of the features that renders the study noteworthy is that it moves beyond established assumptions and repetitive approaches, thereby making it possible to reassess Islamic historiography from different perspectives. The main purpose of this review article, then, is to introduce Robinson’s work on the occasion of its recent incorporation into the Turkish scholarly literature, to analyze its methodological framework, and to explain its place within the broader literature on Islamic historiography. In this context, the work has been examined comparatively in relation to different traditions of historical writing, such as general historical methodology, civilization centered historical narratives, and the approach of chronological classification. Robinson’s treatment of reports has been examined with particular attention to his source criticism and his emphasis on the socio-political background. In addition, this review especially underscores Robinson’s conception of Islamic historiography as something more than a one-dimensional transmission of reports. Alongside this, the occasionally generalizing observations found in the text have also been scrutinized with critical care. Thus, the present review aims both to identify the scholarly contribution of the work in question and to offer a modest contribution to the methodological discussions in the field of Islamic historiography.
