Social Media Addiction and Leisure Time Management Among Middle School Students: An Investigation Within the Context of Social Studies Education

In the contemporary era, social media has emerged as a predominant platform for communication and the dissemination of information, particularly among younger demographics. However, the unconscious and uncontrolled use of these platforms can lead to negative consequences, particularly in adolescents, such as antisocial behaviors, physical health problems, and various psychological problems. In this context, examining the effects of social media use on middle school students has become an increasingly important research priority. In this regard, the present study examined the relationship between social media addiction and leisure time management among middle school students, as well as the effects of certain research variables on this relationship. The sample of the study, which employed a correlational survey model, consisted of 289 students attending two public middle schools. The data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Social Media Addiction Scale, and the Leisure Time Management Scale. The findings of the research indicate that students exhibit moderate levels of social media addiction, while their leisure time management skills are high. Social media addiction did not show significant differences by gender; however, it varied significantly depending on parental restrictions. Furthermore, a moderate negative and significant relationship was identified between social media addiction and leisure time management (r = –.41, p < .001). The findings of the regression analysis indicated that both social media addiction and the time spent on social media on a daily basis exerted statistically significant and negative influences on the management of leisure time. The findings of the study demonstrated a negative correlation between social media addiction and leisure time management scores, with each unit increase in social media addiction resulting in an average decrease of 0.42 points in leisure time management scores. Consequently, it is recommended that parental control over students' social media use be strengthened, that digital awareness be increased, and that preventive awareness campaigns be widespread.

Ortaokul Öğrencilerinde Sosyal Medya Bağımlılığı ve Boş Zaman Yönetimi: Sosyal Bilgiler Öğretimi Bağlamında Bir İnceleme

Öz

Günümüzde sosyal medya, gençler arasında hızla yaygınlaşan bir iletişim ve bilgi paylaşım aracı olarak önemli işlevler üstlenmektedir. Ancak bu platformların bilinçsiz ve kontrolsüz biçimde kullanılması, özellikle ergenlik dönemindeki bireylerde asosyallik, fiziksel sağlık sorunları ve çeşitli psikolojik problemler gibi olumsuz sonuçlara yol açabilmektedir. Bu bağlamda, sosyal medya kullanımının ortaokul düzeyindeki öğrenciler üzerindeki etkilerinin incelenmesi giderek daha önemli hâle gelmektedir. Bu doğrultuda, araştırmada ortaokul öğrencilerinin sosyal medya bağımlılığı ile boş zaman yönetimi arasındaki ilişki ve bazı araştırma değişkenlerin bu ilişki üzerindeki etkileri ele alınmıştır. İlişkisel tarama modelinin kullanıldığı bu çalışmanın örneklemini, iki devlet ortaokulunda öğrenim gören 289 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Veriler, Kişisel Bilgi Formu, Sosyal Medya Bağımlılık Ölçeği ve Boş Zaman Yönetimi Ölçeği aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Araştırma bulguları, öğrencilerin sosyal medya bağımlılık düzeylerinin orta, boş zaman yönetimi becerilerinin ise yüksek olduğunu göstermektedir. Sosyal medya bağımlılığı, cinsiyet açısından anlamlı farklılık göstermezken; ebeveyn kısıtlaması açısından anlamlı düzeyde farklılaşmıştır. Ayrıca, sosyal medya bağımlılığı ile boş zaman yönetimi arasında orta düzeyde, negatif ve anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmuştur (r = –.41, p < .001). Regresyon analizi sonuçları, hem sosyal medya bağımlılığı hem de günlük sosyal medya kullanım süresinin boş zaman yönetimi üzerinde istatistiksel olarak anlamlı ve olumsuz etkiler oluşturduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Sosyal medya bağımlılığındaki her bir birimlik artış, boş zaman yönetimi puanında ortalama 0.42 puanlık bir azalmaya neden olmaktadır. Sonuç olarak, öğrencilerin sosyal medya kullanımına yönelik ebeveyn denetiminin güçlendirilmesi, dijital farkındalığın artırılması ve bağımlılığı önleyici bilinçlendirme çalışmalarının yaygınlaştırılması önerilmektedir.
