Between Algorithm and Transcendence: The Religious Experience Potential of Artificial Intelligence

Abstract

This study explores the nature of religious and mystical experiences within a philosophical framework, specifically examining whether artificial intelligence (AI) systems could possess the capacity to undergo such phenomena. It argues that religious experience cannot be fully explained by cognitive or behavioral processes alone, but is instead a multifaceted phenomenon involving subjective consciousness, intuition, emotion, and transcendence. The central question is whether these phenomenological elements are exclusive to human consciousness or could emerge in advanced AI systems. While existing literature on religious experience is extensive, the intersection of such experiences with AI—especially regarding consciousness and subjective experience—remains underexplored. This research aims to fill this gap through philosophical analysis. Adopting a comparative philosophical method, the study draws on the phenomenological and intuitive theories of thinkers like William James, Rudolf Otto, and Ninian Smart, who emphasize that religious experiences surpass cognitive processes and are shaped by consciousness, bodily engagement, intuition, and transcendence. In contrast, philosophers such as John Searle, Hubert Dreyfus, and Robert Sokolowski argue that AI cannot genuinely experience subjective consciousness, meaning-making, or existential depth. Searle's critique of semantic inadequacy, Dreyfus’s concept of the embodied mind, and Otto's focus on the numinous suggest that AI can only simulate religious experiences superficially. In contrast, Ray Kurzweil posits that consciousness is not biologically exclusive and that sufficiently advanced AI might develop consciousness. Additionally, Alan Turing's "imitation game" suggests AI can replicate human-like behavior, although not necessarily experience it as humans do. Therefore, this study proposes that AI could simulate religious phenomena by synthesizing consciousness, emotion, bodily expression, and meaning-making, but any such experience would remain a mere imitation, lacking the depth and authenticity inherent in human religious experience.
