The Effects of Maximizing Tendency on Job and Life Satisfaction

This study aims to examine the relationships between individuals’ maximizing tendencies and decision fatigue, life satisfaction, perceived excessive workload, and job satisfaction. For this purpose, data were collected from a total of 377 participants working in various sectors through an online survey method, and the proposed hypotheses were analyzed using correlation and regression-based effect tests. In the study, individuals with maximizing and satisficing decision-making tendencies were evaluated in separate groups. The findings revealed that among maximizers, the tendency to maximize was significantly associated with life satisfaction, job satisfaction, and perceived excessive workload, whereas these relationships were not statistically significant among satisficers. The variable of decision fatigue did not show a significant effect in either group. Moreover, mediation analyses using SPSS PROCESS indicated that perceived excessive workload partially mediated the relationship between maximizing tendency and job satisfaction. The results demonstrate that the maximization approach adopted by individuals during decision-making affects not only the moment of decision but also their subsequent experiences of satisfaction, job satisfaction, and perception of workload. This highlights the necessity for organizations to reconsider decision-making processes by taking individual differences in decision styles into account, and to address workload management not only from a physical perspective but also in cognitive and emotional dimensions. Furthermore, the findings point to the need for incorporating psychological differences into economic behavior models and for developing a more personalized choice architecture. Finally, as the study was conducted with a specific sample and a limited set of variables, the generalizability of the findings may be constrained. Future studies may overcome these limitations by employing diverse cultural contexts, occupational groups, and experimental designs. In addition, longitudinal studies would be beneficial to more robustly test the causal relationships among the variables.
