On the Problems of Labeling in Turkish Dictionaries

Abstract

When we look at the development history of lexicography, it can be said that the most striking change and transformation took place in the Sumerian and Akkadian period / clay tablet period, the manuscript dictionary period, the printed dictionaries (with the invention of the printing press), and the electronic dictionary periods. At this point, knowing the story that dictionaries have undergone a great change in terms of both content and material usage, the content is enriched, and the material transforms from the use of clay tablets and papyrus to paper and e-media will be a guide for the dictionary studies of the new millennium.
In the face of the diversification of dictionary entries parallel to scientific developments, lexicographers have developed the labeling scheme. These tags consist of group and record tags in printed dictionaries. In lexicology, the labeling process, pictorial description / abbreviation has been used for two centuries. However, there are several problems with the form and scope of this labeling system. The reason for these problems is that there are many umbrella terms that hide many meanings in the content of all tags. Revealing this hidden content, limiting the dictionary content in terms of usage, labeling according to the context in which it is used have a decisive role in the formation of the body text of the dictionary.
It is seen that the labeling system in Turkish five dictionaries has little commonality and similarity and very high dissimilarity. Considering the pioneering role of TDK-TS in labeling in its own period, dictionaries written after it should at least follow the labeling criteria in TDK-TS. However, the fact that the commonality and similarity aspects of the tags used in MBTS and DBTS and ÖTS are lower than the other two dictionaries indicates that the dictionary tradition is ignored and the attitude of the author is determinant.
In this study, the labeling order and problems of five Turkish dictionaries published in the Republican period were discussed, and the method of scanning, compilation, comparison and analysis was used. The aim of the study is to offer solutions to the questions of the ethical order in Turkish dictionaries. The result of the study is a criterion that will be the basis for labeling: single syllable words with one letter, two letters for words with two or more syllables, two / three letters in the first word for two words, and a coding / abbreviation proposal by taking the first letter of the second word.
