Rushdiye Schools from Modern Educatioal Institutions in the Ottoman Empire: Çaycuma Rushdiye School Example

Abstract

The 19th century, which is also called the longest century of the Ottoman Empire, has been the century of many innovations and transformations in the political, military, educational, economic and social fields. Fundamental reforms in the field of education have taken the biggest share from this change and transformation.
In this century, ibtidai and rushdiye and idadi schools, which are primary and secondary education institutions, began to take the place of primary schools and madrasahs, which are part of traditional education. One of these changes, which is expressed as modernization, has been the opening of rushdiya schools. As the first rushdiya school, “Mekteb-i Maarif-i Adliye” and “Mekteb-i Ulum-ı Edebiye” were opened in 1838. Rushdiya schools were first opened in Istanbul as of 1847, and in the following years, they started to be opened in other big cities as well. Ruşhdiye schools were opened in most of the Ottoman cities from the second half of the century. At the same time, rushdiye schools became an important basic education institution that trains students for high schools (idadi). Rushdiye Schools, especially II. During the reign of Abdulhamid, it became the most important institution that trains personnel for the public. In general, since 1913, it has completed its historical mission by being included in the primary schools (İbtidai).
One of the rushdiye schools opened in the Ottoman provinces is the rushdiye school opened in the town of Çaycuma. Çaycuma Rushdiye School was built as a new building in 1877/1878 and started education and training and continued to train students until the Republic of Turkey. Thus, ıts made significant contributions to the development of Çaycuma's educational and cultural life. In this study, Çaycuma Rushdiye School, which was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was evaluated.
