Kitapta 1766-1775 yılları arasındaki İstanbul elçisi John Murray’nin faaliyetleri çerçevesinde, 18. yüzyılda İstanbul’da ve imparatorluğun diğer iki önemli ticaret kenti İzmir ve Halep’teki İngiliz
ticari ve diplomatik yapısı, bu şehirlerdeki yardımcı görevler ifa eden İngiliz memurlar ve görevliler ile İngilizlerin bu şehirlerdeki sosyal, siyasi ve iktisadi durumlarını incelemiştir. Kitap giriş ve sonuç dahil toplam 6 bölümden oluşmaktadır.
