Political Relations of Turkey and India in the Second Half of the 20th Century
Öz
Turkish-Indian relations have a very long history. Turks’ turn to India opened a new historical page and the relations of the two parties have continued until today with their historical, cultural, religious and political aspects. After India became independent in 1947, Turkish-Indian relations have followed a distant course. While Turkey’s negative reaction towards The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) spearheaded by India left a permanent mark about Turkey in this country, Turkey’s relations with Pakistan also affected the relations with India negatively. In spite of these issues, there were several political developments towards the convergence of the two countries. A treaty of friendship between the two nations entered into force in 1952. On the other hand, upon the invitation of the Indian Parliament in late 1952, Indian trip of the representatives of Turkish Parliament was realized in the first months of 1953. In May 1960, the Indian President Jawaharlal Nehru visited Turkey. Moreover, starting in mid-1960s, Inter-Parliamentary Indo-Turkish Amity Groups in line with the collaboration of the two countries were founded both at the Republican Senate and at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. Relations gained momentum with the official visit of Prime Minister Turgut Özal in 1986. Then the visit of General Secretary of Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs T.S.K. Menon to Turkey in 1987 created a positive atmosphere for the future between the countries. Like in 1980s, there were also attempts to strengthen the relations with mutual visits at the level of presidency and prime ministry in 1990s and 2000. Consequently, despite the fact that both countries had a long process of contact in terms of history and culture, Turco-Indian relations, which politically developed from the independence of India until the year 2000 (particularly in 1980s and 1990s), could not reach the expected level. This study aims to contribute to the elucidation of the Turkish-Indian relations with all their political dimensions since the foundation of independent India on the basis of Turkish Parliament Minutes Journal, archival sources, periodicals and research works.
