Yaşam boyu öğrenme kavramının önem kazanması ile birlikte öne
çıkan özyönetimli öğrenme ve öğrenen özerkliği terimleri farklı
araştırmacılar tarafından farklı biçimlerde yorumlanmıştır. 1960'lı Kuzey
Amerika'da yetişkin eğitimi alanında tartışılmaya başlanan daha sonra
1980'li yıllarda Avrupa'ya gelerek yabancı dil öğrenimi alanını etkileyen bu
terimler bu yolculuk sırasında değişikliğe uğramıştır. Yazın tarandığında
bu iki terimin birbirleri yerine kullanıldığı görülmektedir. Bu alanda
çalışmak isteyen araştırmacılara yol göstermek amacıyla alanla ilgili yazın
taranmış ve süreç içerisinde anlamları değişen ve genişleyen bu terimler
süremsel ve karşılaştırmalı bir şekilde açıklanmıştır.
