Öz
Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, post-romanticist writer of poetry and short stories, maintained an attitude of opposition to rising realist movement of his era. His leyendas in prose, published as serial novels, differ from the poetical ones like those of Duque de Rivas and Zorrilla. Bécquer created those works benefitting from the folkloric Spanish leyendas and transforming them into high literature. Besides this change, a generic evolution took place in terms of the classification by Todorov: the material that inspired Bécquer belonged to supernatural genre and the result of his work to the fantastic genre. He defended his philosophical standpoint through his leyendas, created according to this genre in which supernatural elements appear within an ambient that complies with the reader’s conception of reality passing through a moment of doubt, characteristic of fantastic literature.
