Chemical engineering education which started in Turkey in mid-1930s was based on the chemistry curricula which began in the first years of WWI at the Faculty of Sciences in Istanbul. Although the inauguration of the first chemical engineering programs came later than Europe, modern chemical engineering education in Turkey did not fall behind universal trends. This article aims to examine the transition from chemistry education to chemical engineering education in Turkey. In this respect, the early programs in chemistry are described and compared with those of western countries. The transition process from chemistry to chemical engineering programs and the development in the teaching of modern chemical engineering in Turkey are reviewed.
