The European medieval epic in Romance languages had a common origin, namely, the Germanic chants that had been carried to Europe with de Barbarian invasions of the Roman Empire. But also various other sources contributed to it and thus it ended up incorporating many influences. In the Iberian Peninsula, the oriental influences proved to be much more intense than it other areas, due to the fact that there was a confrontation and assimilation of two cultures during the long part of the Middle Ages; but later much of these influences were seen in the rest of Europe as well. This article claims that there were numerous influences of Arabic literature which served to convert Spanish epic poetry into something different, one way or the other, from those produced in the rest of the occidental world.

Roman dillerindeki Avrupa Ortaçağ epik edebiyatı ortak bir kökene dayanır: Roma İmparatorluğu zamanında barbar kavimlerin istilalarıyla birlikte Avrupa'ya gelmiş olan Cermen şarkılarıdır bu köken. Ancak epik edebiyat, aynı zamanda çok farklı kaynaklardan da beslenmiş ve sonunda pek çok etkiyi kendi içinde bileştirmiştir. İberik Yarımadası'nda ise, Ortaçağ'ın büyük bir bölümünde iki ayrı kültürün karşı karşıya gelmesi ve özümsenmesi gibi özel durumu nedeniyle, Doğu etkileri Avrupa'nın öteki yörelerindekilere kıyasla çok daha güçlü olmuş, ama bu etkilerin çoğu sonradan Avrupa'nın geri kalanında da kendini göstermiştir. Bu makalenin amacı, Arap edebiyatının sayısız etkilerinin, İspanyol epik manzumelerini Batı'nın geri kalanındakilerden farklı kıldığını ortaya koymaktır.
