Historical Method in the Sociology of Durkheim and Gökalp

This paper proposes to study the place of history in sociological analysis of Durkheim and Gökalp. The founder of the French sociology has a complex relationship to history. He endeavors to lay in Règles, the basis of a new discipline and criticize severely the historical method. Thus, in this book, he shows certain reluctance to history, but he don't reject categorically the place of historical method in sociological analysis. In order to obtain autonomy for sociology, he contrasts two traditions of analysis of the social world: the chronological history and philosophy of history. However, Durkheim believes the possibility or even the necessity of a history made sociologically. As for Gökalp, disciple of Durkheim, he endeavors, on the one hand, to establish sociology as an autonomous discipline in Turkey and, on the other hand, resorts to history to seek the rudiments of the nascent Turkish nationalism. This delicate undertaking of Gökalp, founding father of Turkish sociology and ideologue of Turkish nationalism, is the main purpose of this paper.

SOCIOLOGIE VERSUS HISTOIRE? QUELQUES ELEMENTS DE REFLEXIONS SUR LA PLACE DE LA METHODE HISTORIQUE DANS LES SOCIOLOGIES DE DURKHEIM ET DE GÖKALP

Ce travail se propose d'etudier la place de l'histoire dans l'analyse sociologique de Durkheim et de Ziya Gokalp. Le fondateur de l'ecole fran9aise de sociologie a une relation complexe a l'histoire. Sachant qu'il s'ingenie ajeter dans Les regles les bases d'une nouvelle discipline il faut nuancer ses considerations tres critiques it propos de l'histoire. S'il manifeste une certaine reticence dans cet ouvrage envers l'histoire, neanmoins il ne recuse pas categoriquement la place de celle-ci dans l'analyse sociologique. En effet, c'est dans Ie but d'obtenir une autonomie pour la sociologie qu'ill'oppose it deux traditions d'analyse du monde social: l'histoire chronologique et la philosophie de l'histoire. Durkheim croit cependant it la possibilite, voire it la necessite d'une histoire qui est faite sociologiquement. Quant it Gokalp, disciple de Durkheim, il s'ingenie d'une part it instituer la sociologie comme une discipline autonome en Turquie et recourt d'autre part it l'histoire afin d'y chercher les rudiments du nationalisme turc naissant. Cette entreprise delicate de Gokalp, pere fondateur de la sociologie turque et ideologue du nationalisme turc, constitue l'objet principal de cet article.
