Exploring Uncharted Territories:
Less-Explored Aspects of Digitalization and AI in the Labor Market

Digitalization has become a prominent topic of discussion in recent decades. Digitalization has caught the attention of virtually all social science researchers alongside platform-based studies and more recently, artificial intelligence. However, certain aspects of digitalization remain inadequately explored despite such pervading scholarly interest. We welcome contributions that elucidate such facets for this issue of the Journal of Social Policy Conferences. We seek to attract authors who are willing to engage with underresearched but equally significant themes of digitalization. Much has been written about digitalization and its impact on the organization of work; however, scholars have attended less to issues such as the influence of digitalization on social security systems or, for example, workers with disabilities. Can such changes facilitate an easier return of people to the workplace and improve their job performance? Similar questions may be asked about the nature of work. For instance, how are influencers positioned in the labor market? How does digital nomadism affect work? How do such phenomena associated with digitalization impact established methods of working such as traditional employment contracts?
Numerous children may be observed on varied social media platforms, promoting services and products in diverse ways. Is child labor not prohibited? How do countries address this issue? How do international organizations such as the International Labour Organization respond to such developments resulting from digitalization?
An interesting question also arises about the response of regulators and policymakers to the increasing levels of online workplace harassment. Do the existing processes devised to protect workers also function for such online manifestations of harassment? Similar questions may be asked about collective labor relations. Collective bargaining and the termination of collective agreements are fundamental for the maintenance of equality in the labor market but are not immune to change. How is artificial intelligence altering established methodologies pertaining to such activities between social partners?

Themes and questions such as these can be examined from varied perspectives and disciplines. We invite authors from the fields of law, social security, industrial relations, sociology, organization of work, labor economics, and similar domains to submit articles. The Journal of Social Policy Conferences is a peer-reviewed, biannually published journal (http://dergipark.gov.tr/iusskd). We are planning a special December 2024 issue dedicated to the less-researched areas of digitalization and AI. We welcome manuscripts examining any state or region, employing discrete levels and methodologies of analysis, applying different theoretical orientations, and emanating from different scientific domains.
Articles will be selected for publication based on their topical relevance, clear and compelling argumentation, significance, and contribution to the chosen topic. Authors are invited to actively engage in the evolving discourse on emergent concerns and to offer valuable insights that enhance our understanding of the implications of digitalization and AI for the labor market and social policy.
