Flood Susceptibility Assessment through Hydromorphometric Analysis of Esmahanım River Basin

Abstract

Esmahanım Stream Basin, which constitutes the study area, is located within the borders of Akçakoca, Cumayeri and Çilimli districts of Düzce. Material and moral damages occurred in the floods that occurred on various dates in the study area. The aim of this study is to make flood susceptibility classification of Esmahanım Stream basin and its sub-basins by hydromorphometric analysis. In the study, the local resolution is 12.5 m. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data obtained from ALOS (PALSAR) digital elevation data of 2008, was used. The Hydrology tool in the Spatial Analysis toolbox of the Arc-GIS 10.5 software was used for the analysis. Esmahanım Stream sub-basin, Gübi sub-basin and Küpler sub-basin were subjected to various hydromorphometric analyzes. According to the results of the analysis, sub-basins were compared among themselves in terms of flood susceptibility. According to the results obtained, while the flood sensitivity was high in the Gübi Basin, it was moderate in the Esmahanım Sub-Basin and low in the Küpler Basin. It is important to take this situation into account in the planned human activities in Esmahanım and Gübi basins, where flood sensitivity is high and moderate.
