Trends in Climate Characteristics in Selendi River Basin and Their Effects on Erosion
Abstract
In order to foresee our future and plan our life and activities accordingly, it is necessary to have knowledge regarding what the effects of climate change will be on certain issues. In this study, the changes and trends in climate parameters affecting erosion were tried to be revealed by using the meteorological station data concerning Selendi River Basin. In addition, the changes in climate parameters were evaluated in terms of erosion. In line with this purpose, daily temperature and precipitation data belonging to the Uşak, Gediz, Simav and Demirci Meteorological Stations were obtained from the Turkish State Meteorological Service. Firstly, in order to reveal the differentiation in climate type, meteorological station data were discussed in 15-year periods as 1960-1974 and 1997-2011. Climate type and water balance sheets calculated according to Thonthwaite (1948) method, drought analyses in line with the monthly index values calculated according to De Martonne formula (1923) and yearly index values calculated according to De Martonne and Gottman formula (1942), arid and humid months prepared with the precipitation efficiency index of Erinç (1965) were evaluated and compared in 15-year periods. Thus, the differentiation in climate type was revealed in a short time according to the meteorological station data. Furthermore, linear trend and Mann-Kendall analysis were applied on the precipitation and temperature data. In contrast to the increasing trend in the temperatures of the stations used in the research, the decreasing trend in the precipitation amount reveals that the climate in the research area tends to gain a more arid character. This aridification can be expected to have a superficial flow and thus erosion-increasing effect. In addition, the increases observed in the frequencies of rain showers are also important in terms of its erosion-increasing effect.
