Determination of Antibiotic Resistance Status of Escherichia coli Strains Isolated From Drinking And Usage Water in Sakarya Province

Abstract

Pathogen contamination in water systems is increasing and this situation leads to an increase in gastrointestinal infections especially among children. The aim of this study is to determine the risk of E. coli contamination in drinking and usage water within the borders of Sakarya province and to examine the antibiotic resistance status of the isolated strains. E. coli was isolated from 450 water samples collected from the districts of Sakarya between 2023-2024 using membrane filtration method and chromogenic coliform agar (CCA). Antibiotic resistance of bacteria was evaluated by disk diffusion method. E. coli was detected in 15.6% of 450 water samples. E. coli was found in 72% of the water samples taken from Geyve district, and this rate was found to be statistically significantly higher than other districts(p<0.05). It was determined that 25.71% of the isolated strains were resistant to one or more antibiotics. E. coli strains are generally sensitive to carbapenems and 3rd generation cephalosporins, but resistance to penicillin and cephalosporins was detected in some samples. High E. coli contamination and antibiotic resistance were detected in drinking and utility water in regions where agriculture and animal husbandry are intense. This situation is seen as a result of incorrect and excessive antibiotic use. This contamination in drinking water poses a great risk to public health. The presence of E. coli in drinking and utility water indicates deficiencies in disinfection of water and the risk of fecal contamination. Improving water treatment facilities and disinfection methods, preventing antibiotic resistance and raising public awareness are of great importance. The results of this study emphasize the need for safe and hygienic water supply.
