Evaluation of Soil Quality Indices in the Process of Soil Degradation and Desertification
Abstract
Soil quality is becoming increasingly poor due to desertification and land degradation. The soil quality index consists of texture, organic matter, and lime content parameters. This research was conducted to determine soil quality in the Ondokuzmayıs district of Samsun Province, regarding land degradation and desertification. Ondokuzmayıs District covers an area of approximately 360 km2. Each soil criterion was weighted using the Analytical Hierarchical Process. The weighting revealed that the highest weight was determined for soil erosion risk (22.7%), while the lowest weight was determined for soil pollution (2.8%). According to the results, organic matter concentration was found to be moderate, lime content was generally low, and drainage was very poor in the northern wetlands. The resulting map showed high soil quality in 58% of the area. t was observed that the drainage quality in the bottom lands was low, and the presence of wetlands and paddy fields impacted this result
