Assessment of Cigarette Butt Density and Distribution in Urban Areas: Development of a Cigarette Butt Pollution Index for Campus Areas

Tobacco consumption poses a significant threat not only to public health but also to environmental sustainability. The global increase in cigarette consumption has contributed significantly to environmental pollution, with cigarette butts becoming one of the most common types of litter worldwide. These non-biodegradable butts lead to an accumulation of microplastics and nanoplastics that damage soils and aquatic ecosystems. While existing studies typically focus on the accumulation of cigarette butts in coastal areas, there is limited research on their density and distribution in urban environments. This problem is particularly evident on university campuses, where smoking rates among young adults are high and improper disposal of cigarette butts is a widespread problem. The aim of this study is to assess cigarette butt pollution on university campuses by developing a pollution index and proposing targeted measures to minimize the environmental impact. The results show that the density of cigarette butts increases significantly during exam periods, resulting in "heavy pollution" of the entire campus. The highest levels of the pollution index were observed in classrooms and social areas, where the impact of peers is strongest. In addition, misconceptions about the biodegradability of cigarette butts and the impact of peer behavior further exacerbate the problem of littering. To summarize, effective management of cigarette butt litter on campus requires enhanced awareness campaigns and improved litter management strategies. Education and awareness programs aimed at reducing the influence of peer pressure and stress on smoking behavior will play a crucial role in solving this problem.
