The aim of this study was to investigate the negative effects of secondary bacterial infections on animal behaviour and prognosis in puppies infected with canine distemper virus infection. The study was conducted in Hatay Alfa Vet Veterinary Clinic between June 2023 and June 2024 and some behaviours of 35 puppies were followed. In the study, the mortality rate of puppies infected with canine distemper virus infection was determined as 28.6%. The involvement of secondary bacterial infections increased the mortality rate (43%). It was determined that age and breed positively affected the mortality rate in addition to increasing the possibility of contracting bacterial and viral diseases. Central nervous system disorders and abnormal behaviour have been observed in dogs with viral infections. Secondary bacterial infections have been found to increase the severity of the disease, symptoms and behavioural disorders. It was determined that bacterial and viral infections can be prevented with appropriate care, feeding, hygiene, individual housing and regular vaccination programmes. In conclusion, it was determined that secondary bacterial infections increase the severity and mortality rate of viral infections, animals with infections develop abnormal behaviours and prevention of diseases is more important than treatment.
