Gender Differences in Economies of Scale and Resource-Use Efficiency of Rice Production Among Smallholder Farmers in the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 3 Sayı: 2, 119 - 143, 25.12.2025

Öz

This study analyzed gender differences in economies of scale and resource use efficiency in rice production among smallholder farmers in Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory. A multistage sampling method was used to gather data from 316 smallholder rice farmers through a structured questionnaire. The study employed statistical and econometric tools such as descriptive statistics, Cobb-Douglas production function, marginal productivity, resource-use efficiency, and economies of scale to meet its objectives. Results indicated that the average age of male smallholder farmers was 44 years, compared to 42 years for females. The estimated return to scale was 0.7207 for males, 0.6151 for females, and 0.6529 for the combined data, suggesting decreasing returns to scale (DRS). Both male and female farmers were found to underutilize their resources. Consequently, the study recommends providing farm mechanization and machinery, such as tractors with implements, to both men and women for land preparation to reduce labor drudgery and costs while maximizing profits. Additionally, the government should facilitate access to irrigation facilities, offering an alternative farming system to ensure year-round food production.
