The Iron Fire in the Balkans: Osman Nevres and the Attempted Assassination of the Buxton Brothers

The assassination attempt on the Buxton brothers highlights the complexity and volatility of the situation in the Balkans, illustrating regional conflicts and the rivalries of the Great Powers. After the outbreak of the war, both the Entente and the Central Powers attempted to win over new allies to their side. Balkan states become important to both powers blocs. This article first examines the activities of the Buxton brothers in the Balkans and their presence in Romania. Secondly, it analyzes the circumstances of the assassination attempt against the Buxton brothers and the subsequent trial proceedings. Furthermore, it highlights the intelligence gathered by the Romanian police concerning the Ottoman espionage network operating in the Balkans. The study is based on previously unpublished documents from Romanian archival sources.
