The Association Between Primary Nocturnal Enuresis and Allergic Disease in Children: A Single Center Experience

Öz

Objective: Enuresis nocturna (EN) and allergic diseases are common disorders in childhood. Both are associated with detrimental psychosocial impacts and higher morbidity rates. The potential relationship between these two diseases has been the subject of the studies, revealing a significant association between them. We aimed to study the association between EN and asthma, allergic rhinitis (AR), and atopic dermatitis (AD) in children. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted with 383 patients as 186 cases with monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MSE) and age-matched 197 controls. The International Study of Asthma and Allergy in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire was administered to the parents of children aged six years or older diagnosed with MSE and the parents of individuals in the control group. Patients were evaluated using complete blood count, serum total immunoglobulin (Ig)E and serum specific IgE levels, and skin prick tests. Results: Allergic diseases were detected in 36 patients (19.4%) in the study group and 18 patients (9.2%) in the control group. This was a statistically significant difference with a p value of 0.005. Eosinophil counts did not have a significant difference between the study and control groups. Total IgE levels were significantly elevated in the study group (p: 0.03). Desmopressin treatment was more revelant in the study group (p: 0.05). Conclusion: We found a significant association between MSE and childhood allergic diseases. High total IgE levels were associated with the MSE in children, and allergic-enüretic children need desmopressin treatment more than non-allergic enüretic children. The treatment of allergic diseases may also lead to the resolution of MSE without additional treatment.
