Reception Practices of Turkish Serials in Portugal

Abstract

This study examines how Turkish TV series are received on Portuguese social media platforms, using Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model as its theoretical framework. Viewer comments from Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube were analyzed through qualitative content analysis and classified into dominant, negotiated, and oppositional decoding positions. Findings indicate that most Portuguese viewers respond positively or negotiate meaning based on their own cultural frameworks. The appeal of Turkish dramas—marked by emotional storytelling, traditional values, and high production quality—has led to a strong fan base. However, certain comments express resistance or criticism, often stemming from cultural or ideological dissonances. The study highlights that audiences are not passive recipients but active interpreters who engage in meaning-making via social media platforms. Ultimately, the research underscores the intercultural dialogue facilitated by Turkish series and contributes to discussions on transnational media reception, cultural globalization, and soft power dynamics in international broadcasting.
