Epistemic Violence and the Colonisation of Truth: A Foucauldian Reading of Israeli Discourses on Palestine

Abstract

This study aims to analyse Israel's discourses towards Palestine not only within the framework of political and ideological boundaries, but also on the plane of distortion of truth and epistemic violence. The study examines Israel's discourse strategies towards Palestine through the historical and theoretical foundations of Zionist ideology and aims to analyse how these strategies operate as a regime of knowledge-power in the Foucauldian sense and how truth is reproduced through domination. The data collection process of the research was carried out by document analysis method. Document analysis covers the process of systematically collecting, examining and analysing written and visual materials in printed or electronic media in line with the determined research purpose. It is a common approach to utilise written and visual sources in cases where direct observation or interview methods cannot be applied or in order to increase the validity of the study. In this framework, texts, documents, visual materials and other relevant documents produced by different individuals and institutions were systematically collected and analysed. The document analysis method was preferred in order to increase the objectivity of the research and to ensure that the subject is handled in a multi-dimensional manner. The myth of a land without a people for a landless people with the instrumentalisation of Zionist ideology and the Holocaust as a historical trauma has been evaluated as knowledge-based denial of Palestine and the domination of truth. In the Foucauldian sense, knowledge is not a neutral and rational tool; it is the product of power relations. The study aims to make a theoretical analysis of the Palestinian discourse by considering truth not as a rational knowledge but as a phenomenon that operates within power relations and is used to provide legitimacy.
