How Did Social Evolution Of Observation Develop In Visual Arts?: Authenticity, Profilicity, And Communicative Gaze

Öz

This paper investigates the conceptual correspondences between the visual arts and the performance of identity in the contemporary digital era, employing the theory of observation, discourses on authenticity, and the framework of profilicity as principal analytical lenses. The analysis contends that modalities of self-presentation and identity experience have undergone fundamental transformation since the era of Goffman, owing to the proliferation of digital technologies that instantiate novel forms of surveillance, hyper-visibility, and mediated self-representation.Through critical engagement with canonical instances from art history, the article’s purpose is to demonstrate that these dynamics possess historical antecedents in the visual strategies of artists including Hopper, Picasso, and Schiele and different visual representations of observation regimes Hopper’s renderings of isolation and urban solitude are interpreted as potent metaphors for the communicative isolation and alienation intrinsic to modern subjectivity in modern world.Picasso’s Cubist oeuvre is examined as a visual corollary to the fragmented, multi-perspectival construction of identity, while Schiele’s self-portraits illuminate the constitutive role of the observer’s gaze in the ontogenesis of the self.In conclusion, moving beyond descriptive art historical analysis, the article conceptualizes the visual arts as a locus of second-order observation and articulates a hybrid epistemological approach that synthesizes philosophical reflection with rigorous visual analysis.
