Visual Rhetoric and Enthymeme in Public Relations: Implicit Persuasion in the UNDP Anti-Violence Against Women PSA
Öz
The objective of this study is to contribute to persuasive message design within the scope of public relations rhetoric by examining the deployment of enthymemes in the conceptualization of visual rhetoric. In this study, the public service announcement (PSA) against violence against women, produced by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and broadcast with the hashtag #ŞiddetinBahanesiYoktur, was examined through a qualitative and structural analysis. The methodology of the study investigated how anti-violence arguments are generated within the framework of visual rhetoric and what kind of enthymematic cognitive processes they undergo in the public sphere. Within this scope, Sonja K. Foss’s (2004) visual rhetoric evaluation criteria and Barbara J. Phillips and Edward F. McQuarrie’s (2004) visual rhetoric typology were utilized concurrently. The PSA, selected as the research unit in accordance with purposive sampling, was analyzed through the structural elements of visual rhetoric, meaning operations, and non-verbal communication codes. The findings obtained from the analysis indicate that explicit depictions of physical violence are avoided; instead, implicit messages are constructed through the 'juxtaposition' and 'opposition' cells within the visual rhetoric typology, relying on a simple visual structure. Through these implicit messages, the investigated PSA produces second-order visual enthymemes, masking the tragic consequence of violence against women and directing the public to fill this interpretive gap via shared social beliefs (doxa). Furthermore, it can be argued that the body language in the analyzed PSA functions to destabilize the patriarchal structure, which constitutes the emotional dimension (pathos) of the persuasive process. This study provides a theoretical contribution to the public relations rhetoric literature regarding how socio-political message resistance can be transcended through sophisticated visual argumentations.
