SUICIDE, INCOME LEVEL AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CONVICTS WHO GRADUATED FROM HIGHER EDUCATION
Abstract
Suicide is one of the major research topics because of its economic and social implications. The reasons for suicides are diverse: marital and family conflicts, lack of livelihood, debts, and addictions. In this study the relationship between suicide, income level, and convicts with a college degree is examined using data from 1997-2019 in Turkey. The stability of the variables reviewed using ADF and PP tests. Structural breaks of the series were analyzed using the Bai-Perron approach, ıt was determined that the variables were affected by structural breaking. The fractures are said to be due to political conflicts or economic crises. According to the results of the ARDL boundary test approach, has been concluded that income level and higher education variables had a negative and statistically significant effect on suicide in the long term. While the impact of income level on suicide in the short period was negative and statistically significant, the variable of higher education was found to be positive as a coefficient and statistically considerable after a lag. Appointing free psychological counselors in each city, starting from the regions with the most suicide cases, by providing governmental support, and providing regular psychological support to companies, especially to their low-paid and newly graduated employees, will reduce the negative impact of suicide.
