Sustainable Agriculture and Future Perspectives of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Cultivated in Türkiye

Öz

Medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) have historically been used for therapeutic, nutritional, cosmetic, and ritual purposes and today hold strategic importance in modern pharmacology, food, and cosmetic industries. Turkey, hosting approximately 12,000 plant species with 3,700 endemics, represents a significant center for MAP production and export. However, large-scale reliance on wild collection, overharvesting, climate change, lack of standardized planting material, insufficient agricultural practices, post-harvest losses, and marketing challenges pose multifaceted threats to the sector. Sustainable agricultural practices, including organic and good agricultural practices (GAP), certified planting material, ecological production techniques, and digital farming technologies, provide critical benefits both environmentally and economically. These approaches contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, enhancement of quality standards, rural development, and increased competitiveness in international markets. The future of MAP cultivation in Türkiye depends on integrating sustainable production, value-added product development, and supportive policies, ensuring both ecological sustainability and economic growth.

TÜRKİYE’DE YETİŞTİRİLEN TIBBİ VE AROMATİK BİTKİLERİN SÜRDÜRÜLEBİLİR TARIMI VE GELECEK PERSPEKTİFLERİ

Öz

Tıbbi ve aromatik bitkiler (TAB), tarihsel olarak tedavi, beslenme, kozmetik ve ritüel amaçlarla kullanılmış olup günümüzde modern farmakoloji, gıda ve kozmetik sektörlerinde stratejik öneme sahiptir. Türkiye, yaklaşık 12.000 bitki türü ve 3.700 endemik türle zengin bir biyolojik çeşitliliğe sahiptir; bu durum ülkeyi TAB üretimi ve ihracatında önemli bir merkez haline getirmektedir. Ancak üretimin hâlen büyük ölçüde doğadan sağlanması, aşırı toplama, iklim değişikliği, standart üretim materyali eksikliği, tarımsal uygulamalardaki yetersizlikler, hasat sonrası kayıplar ve pazarlama sorunları gibi çok boyutlu problemleri beraberinde getirmektedir. Sürdürülebilir tarım uygulamaları, organik ve iyi tarım yöntemleri, sertifikalı üretim materyali kullanımı, ekolojik üretim teknikleri ve dijital tarım teknolojilerinin entegrasyonu, hem çevresel hem de ekonomik açıdan sektörde önemli kazanımlar sağlamaktadır. Bu yaklaşımlar, biyolojik çeşitliliğin korunmasını, kalite standartlarının yükselmesini, kırsal kalkınmayı ve uluslararası pazarlarda rekabet gücünün artırılmasını desteklemektedir. Türkiye’nin TAB yetiştiriciliğinin geleceği, sürdürülebilir üretim, katma değerli ürün geliştirme ve politika destekleri ile şekillenecek, hem ekolojik hem de ekonomik kazanımlar sağlayacaktır.
