Teaching language in the age of artificial intelligence. Threat or transformation?

Abstract
This editorial discusses the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies on language learning and explores the question of whether this transformation is a threat or an opportunity. AI-assisted tools in modern educational contexts personalize learning processes and, in doing so, redefine the professional roles of teachers. This paper discusses issues of ethical boundaries, cultural diversity and critical awareness in language learning, and focuses on the potential of AI to accelerate learning while weakening the process of meaning-making. As a result, AI’s role in education should not be rejected; however, it should be redefined as human-centered and with an ethical approach. Therefore, the role of AI in education should not be dismissed but redefined through a human-centered and ethically grounded approach.
