Teaching English for Nursing Students within the Scope of English for Specific Purposes

This article reviews research on English for Nursing within the field of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) thematically. With the increasing demand for English in nursing education and professional communication, numerous studies have been conducted on nursing students' language requirements, teaching strategies, and challenges in ESP classrooms. However, existing studies tend to focus on specific aspects of Nursing English rather than providing an integrated thematic overview of the field. This review summarizes previous research, focusing on three key themes: common language needs of nursing students, teaching strategies in English in Nursing courses, and challenges encountered in ESP contexts. The findings highlight persistent issues such as varying proficiency levels, a lack of ESP-specific materials, and limited teaching time, while also emphasizing the need for professional vocabulary and communication skills. This study aims to provide an overview of current practices in English in Nursing, as well as offer pedagogical implications for course design and instruction.

Özel Amaçlı İngilizce (ESP) Kapsamında Hemşirelik Öğrencilerine İngilizce Öğretimi

Öz

Bu çalışma, Özel Amaçlı İngilizce (ESP) alanı kapsamında Hemşirelik Amaçlı İngilizceye ilişkin araştırmaları tematik olarak incelemektedir. Hemşirelik eğitiminde ve mesleki iletişimde İngilizceye duyulan ihtiyacın artmasıyla birlikte, hemşirelik öğrencilerinin dil gereksinimleri, öğretim stratejileri ve ESP sınıflarında karşılaşılan zorluklar üzerine çok sayıda çalışma yürütülmüştür. Ancak mevcut çalışmalar, Hemşirelik İngilizcesinin belirli yönlerine odaklanma eğilimindedir ve alana ilişkin bütüncül bir tematik değerlendirme sunmamaktadır. Bu derleme, önceki araştırmaları üç temel tema çerçevesinde sentezlemektedir: hemşirelik öğrencilerinin ortak dil ihtiyaçları, Hemşirelik İngilizcesi derslerinde kullanılan öğretim stratejileri ve ESP bağlamlarında karşılaşılan zorluklar. Bulgular, farklı dil yeterlilik düzeyleri, ESP’ye özgü materyal eksikliği ve sınırlı öğretim süresi gibi süregelen sorunlara dikkat çekerken; aynı zamanda mesleki kelime bilgisi ve iletişim becerilerinin önemini vurgulamaktadır. Bu çalışma, Hemşirelik Amaçlı İngilizce alanındaki mevcut uygulamalara genel bir bakış sunmayı ve ders tasarımı ile öğretim süreçlerine yönelik pedagojik çıkarımlar ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır.
