Study on the Adsorption Properties of Natural Anorganic Hidrokolloids of Turkey

Öz

In this study, the adsorption properties of some naturally exisisting clays in Turkey has been investigated from the pharmaceutical technology point of view. The samples were obtained personally from various parts of Turkey (Table I). The clays were cleaned by washing and dried in an oven or by lyophilization. Samples were identified by the test procedures given in the pharmacopeae and found that all samples showed the clay properties i. e. consists of hidrated aluminium silicate. The swelling properties of the lyophilized or non lyophilized samples were determined according to B. P. 1973 It was found that the clay obtained from Tokat-Reşadiye (Clay No 1) showed an increased swelling property after lyoplization. This results indicated that clay No 1 has a three layer structure (Montmorillonit) and the other clays consists of two layers (kaolinit). The adsorption properties of the clays were initially tested using a cathionic dye, methylene blue. It was seen that the clays No 2, 4, 5 and 6 showed important adsorption properties which are also superior to kollin. Kodein phosphate was chosen as an active chemical for the furtner investigations on the adsorption properties. The adsorption capacities of the clays were determined from langmuir adsorption isoterms. In all cases the adsorption capacity of the clays were higher with the lyophilized samples than the ones which were not lyophilized. The best adsorption property was observed with the clay No 2 i. e Kırşehir-Mucur clay and its adsorption capacity was found to be similar to Bentonite (U.S.P.). The adsorption of codein phosphate on the clays were dependent on the amount of [H+ ] ion in the media' and the adsorption capasity increasee in alkali media. The maximum adsorption capasity was achieved at pH 9.2. It was also observed that the adsorption capacity increased with and increase in the spesific surface area of the clay, as expected. It was concluded that the adsorption capacity of Kırşehir-Mucur clay is as good as Bentonite (USP) and can be used in its place.
