Effect of Nursing and Humor Course on Humor Styles and Personality Traits

Öz

The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the "Nursing and Humor" course on the humor styles and personality traits of nursing students. This study employed a non-randomized post-test control group design. The sample consisted of 80 nursing students from a university in Turkey who participated in the "Nursing and Humor" course and 76 nursing students who had no prior education in humor. Data were collected using the "Descriptive Characteristics Form," "Humor Styles Scale," and "Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised Short Form." The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 24, with frequency, percentage, mean, and statistical tests applied to compare the differences between the two groups' means. The findings revealed that over 90% of students frequently used humor in family and interpersonal relationships and perceived themselves as competent in humor (89.3% for those who took the course and 89.6% for those who did not). Students who participated in the humor course exhibited significantly higher extroversion scores compared to those who did not. Additionally, a positive correlation was found between self-enhancing humor style and extroversion, while a negative correlation was observed between self-enhancing humor style and neuroticism. This study demonstrates that the "Nursing and Humor" course positively influences nursing students' humor styles and personality traits, particularly by enhancing extroversion and promoting the use of self-enhancing humor. The findings suggest that humor education can help students recognize and apply humor styles that align with their personality traits, and they provide valuable insights for revising and enhancing course curricula to foster better communication skills and emotional well-being in future healthcare professionals.
