Research Trends in Fear of Falling and Hip Fractures: A Bibliometric Analysis

Öz

Fear of falling in older adults can lead to falls and hip fractures, while the occurrence of fractures may further increase fear of falling. This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of research on fear of falling and hip fractures in older adults. Data were retrieved from the Scopus database using the keywords "fear of falling," "hip fracture," "femoral fracture," "femoral neck fracture," and "intertrochanteric fracture." A total of 150 English-language research and review articles were analyzed using RStudio software. The first study on fear of falling and hip fractures was published in 1997, with the highest number of publications recorded in 2024. The most prolific authors in this field are Becker C. (10 publications), Achterberg WP. (7), Pfeiffer K. (7), and Van Balen R. (7). The institutions with the highest publication counts are Robert Bosch Hospital (32) and Leiden University Medical Center (27). The countries with the highest citation counts are the United States (1500), the Netherlands (1231), and Australia (880). The most cited publication is the 2013 review by Ambrose et al., “Risk factors for falls among older adults: A review of the literature,” with 1255 citations. The most frequently used keywords are “aged,” “female,” “male,” “human,” and “hip fracture.” Research collaborations on hip fractures and fear of falling are concentrated in developed countries. These findings highlight the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and the potential role of digital solutions in addressing this critical issue.
