Integrating AI Chatbots into Surgical Nursing: Innovations in Patient Care

Öz

Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbots are increasingly being integrated into healthcare systems, offering new opportunities to enhance care delivery, especially in surgical nursing. These technologies, which utilize natural language processing and machine learning, can support nurses in various stages of perioperative care by providing timely patient education, facilitating communication, and reducing administrative burdens. This narrative review explores the historical development of chatbot technology, its technical foundations, and its applications within the context of surgical nursing. Evidence from recent studies indicates that AI-driven chatbots can improve patient engagement, reduce anxiety, and enhance satisfaction through personalized, accessible, and interactive communication. Moreover, they contribute to improved workflow efficiency and decision-making support for nurses. However, the widespread adoption of these tools requires careful consideration of ethical, legal, and professional implications, particularly regarding data privacy, system transparency, and clinical responsibility. While chatbots are not intended to replace healthcare professionals, they hold significant potential as complementary tools to augment nursing care. This review highlights current advancements, identifies implementation challenges, and emphasizes the need for comprehensive guidelines and future research to ensure the safe and effective integration of AI chatbots in surgical nursing practice.
