An Alternative Birth Method: Water Birth With Benefits And Risks

Water birth which dates back to ancient times, has become an increasingly common alternative birth method in recent years. It has been proven that water birth significantly reduces first stage of labor and the need for analgesic and regional anesthesia. Although there has been no association with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, a complete consensus has not been reached among scientific institutions regarding the conditions of implementation due to some potential risks that might be occurred. If the necessary conditions are met, it seems to be a viable method in order to encourage the normal birth of mothers in countries with high cesarean rates like ours. However, in order to be able to settle in the practice of birth in water, it is necessary to establish legal arrangements in which the possible benefits and risks are balanced. In this review, our aim is to give general information about water birth, to talk about application technique, to share current data about possible benefits and risks, and to present future projections in this regard.

Alternatif Bir Doğum Yöntemi; Faydaları ve Riskleri İle Suda Doğum

Tarihi çok eski zamanlara kadar dayanan suda doğum, son yıllarda popülaritesi giderek artan bir alternatif doğum yöntemi olmuştur. Doğum eyleminin birinci evresini kısalttığı, analjezik ve rejyonel anestezi ihtiyacını azalttığı kanıtlanmıştır. Her ne kadar olumsuz maternal ve neonatal sonuçlarla ilişkisi gösterilememişse de, meydana gelebilecek bazı potansiyel riskler nedeniyle uygulanma koşulları ile ilgili bilimsel kuruluşlar arasında tam bir fikir birliğine varılamamıştır. Gerekli koşulların sağlanması halinde bizim gibi sezaryen oranı yüksek seyreden ülkelerde anne adaylarını normal doğuma teşvik etmek amacıyla uygulanabilir bir yöntem olarak görünmektedir. Ancak, suda doğumun doğum pratiğine yerleşebilmesi için olası yarar ve riskler dengesinin kurulduğu yasal düzenlenmelerin oluşturulması gerekmektedir. Bu derlemede amacımız suda doğumla ilgili genel bilgiler vermek, uygulama tekniğinden bahsetmek, olası faydalar ve riskler hakkındaki güncel verileri paylaşmak ve bu konuda geleceğe yönelik projeksiyonlar sunmaktır.
