Following World War II, an international polarization began along the lines of the United States (US) and the Soviet Union. These global changes led to fundamental shifts in Turkey's domestic and foreign policy. The Soviet Union, the leader of the group known as the Eastern Bloc, demanded rights from the Turkish state, particularly regarding the Bosphorus and territory in Eastern Anatolia, forcing Ankara to seek new security measures. Having maintained neutrality during World War II, Turkey entered a phase of rapprochement with the Western Bloc in the face of this threat. This rapprochement was not only political but also military in nature. Furthermore, the transition to a multi-party system in Turkey during this period, known as the Cold War, made fundamental changes inevitable. Particularly between 1945 and 1950, many parties began to operate, with the Democratic Party (DP) gaining strength against the Republican People's Party (CHP). The most significant event of this transition period was the parliamentary elections of May 14, 1950. As a result of these elections, the DP came to power, and significant developments occurred in the country.
While these developments were taking place on the national and international stage, a newspaper began publication in Ceyhan, a city in Çukurova with fertile agricultural lands. This newspaper, called Yeni Ses (New Voice), was published both during the multi-party period and just before the 1950 general elections. Following a publishing policy focused on diverse perspectives during elections, Yeni Ses also had a structure that reflected the pulse of the city. An examination of its content reveals that Yeni Ses exhibited a pro-DP (Democratic Party) editorial policy and actively tried to inform the public during the by-elections of September 15, 1951. Besides local news, it informed its readers about various issues such as sending soldiers to the Korean War, the arrival and settlement of Turkish-origin immigrants from Bulgaria to Ceyhan, and the suppression of communist activities. Furthermore, while the newspaper embraced Atatürk's principles and reforms, it maintained a respectful stance towards religious and moral values. Constantly conveying local news to its readers, Yeni Ses, despite its short publication period, became a cultural legacy and memory of the city of Ceyhan. In a city with rich press resources, the existence of such a publication in Ceyhan, which had the status of a district, alongside long-running newspapers like Türksözü, Yeni Adana, Seyhan, and Demokrat, was significant in terms of the diversity of local content.
