The Demographic Structure of Van Township’s NonMuslim Villages According to the 1252 (1836) Population Census
Öz
Initially, the census which was for determinations of land and tax was substituted more systematic
census when the Otoman Empire began to modernize in the 19th century. On the basis of innovations, the
first modern population census, which requires the state to centralize in many fields especially about tax
and military service, was done in 1831. Thus, the empire sought to have a detailed knowledge of the quantity
and qualities of its human power. Due to the heterogeneous population structure and political and military
reasons, it was so difficult to determine the actual population. One of the census, which was tried to spread
throughout the empire, was made in the state of Van in 1836. In this census, except the center villages and
neighborhoods, the records of sub-district and district of Van, was also provided.
In this study, ‘’The Book of Non-muslim Male Population of the Centre Villages of Van within the
State of Van’’ registered with the NFS.d code and with the number 2798 and ‘’The Book of Non-muslim
Villages that are Abroad under the Centre of Van’’ registered with the NFS.d code and with the number
2799 in the Prime Ministry Ottoman Archive, which follows the prior especially about the settlement
places, were examined
