Hypertension and Beyond; Exploring Fatigue, Dyspnea, and Physical Function: a cohort study

Öz

Objective: Hypertension can negatively affect physical performance, causing increased fatigue and dyspnea during daily activities. The aim of our study was to investigate fatigue, dyspnea and functional capacity of people diagnosed with hypertension. Material and Methods: The study was conducted with 60 participants diagnosed with hypertension and 60 normotensive (non-hypertensive), totaling 120 participants. Fatigue was assessed with the Fatigue Impact Scale and Fatigue Severity Scale, dyspnea with the Modified Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale (mMRC), and functional capacity with the 6 Minute Walking Test. Results: Psychological scores from the subscales of the FIS were statistically significantly lower in the normotensive group compared to the hypertensive group (p = 0.014). When the mMRC dyspnea scale was evaluated, a statistically significant difference was obtained between the groups in terms of distribution (p<0.001). The results of the study show that hypertensive subjects have reduced functional exercise capacity. Conclusions: The increased level of fatigue negatively affected the psychological status of the patients, and increased dyspnea at high blood pressure also affected ambulation-related activities of daily living compared to normotensive people of similar age.
