The
use of social media is increasing rapidly with each passing day. Health and
fitness-related social media content is very popular and many health-related
content is produced on social media. In parallel to this situation, many health
consumers are looking for health-related information in social media channels;
however, information from these platforms can be misleading. Increased ease of
access to the internet and social media platforms provides an environment for
individuals with eating disorders to share their feelings, experiences and
information about their diseases. Eating disorders is a psychiatric disorder
that causes important problems in people's eating behavior and related thoughts
and feelings. It is more common in women and adolescents. The etiology of
eating disorder includes more than 30 defined risk factors such as
environmental and genetic factors. Environmental factors include family status
and interpersonal relationships, media exposure, while other factors include a cultural emphasis on diet and body perception. Pro eating disorder content
websites may cause eating disorder to continue.
Because pro-Anorexia websites promote eating irregularly, allowing
anorexia to be seen as a fashion or beauty perception. They also share tips on
how to become anorexic. Exposure to these websites has been associated with
adverse effects such as negative mood and reduced self-esteem, reduced
perceived attractiveness, and increased diet in experimental studies. In this
review, we aimed to review the effects of social media on eating disorders and
its potential negativities with the current literature.
