DETERMINATION OF PLATELETCRIT, MEAN PLATELET VOLUME IN PATIENTS WITH COVID 19 PNEUMONIA
ABSTRACT
Backround: This study aims to investigate the role of mean platelet volume (MPV), MPV/PLT ratio, Platecrit (PCT) and other parameters of complete blood count on predicting prognosis in patients with Covid 19 pneumonia.
Materials and methods: 150 patients hospitalized with Covid 19 in our hospital -a tertiary center- between March 2020 and May 2020 recruited in the study. Demographic and clinical data including age, gender, accompanying chronic diseases and laboratory test results were retrospectively collected from medical records and electronic databases. The study population was divided into two groups according to clinical course, and a control group added.
Results: Even dough platelet count, MPV and MPV/PLT ratio were statistically similar, PCT was significantly lower in Covid (+) groups.
Conclusions: Our research showed an association between platelet indices (especially PCT) and clinical course of Covid 19 pneumonia patients in intensive care units. PCT may be a predictor in the prognosis of patients with Covid 19 patients. The pathological platelet parameters mechanism in COVID-19 patients, remains poorly defined, and further clinical and basic research are necessary.
