The Situation of Food Industry Based on Animal Production in Diyarbakır Province

The aim of this survey was to determine the current status of the animal products processing (meat,
milk and eggs) industry: raw material supply, production, quality, technical infrastructure, capacity utilization
situation, marketing conditions and expectations from the public authority. A total of 16 animal food products
manufacturing company were visited and the study was carried out with frm owners or responsible staffs by face
to face interviews. The questionnaire consisting of 34 questions directed to the related personels and the answers
were recorded. We obtained that there were 16 animal food products processing frms in Diyarbakir province, 8 of
them were dealing with milk and milk products processing and 7 of them were dealing with egg packaging and
one of them was with meat and meat products processing. Our results showed that technical facilities were found
adequate, enterprise owners have enough production capasity but, their plant utilization is quite low for yoghurt,
ayran, white cheese, butter and egg packaging as %16.6, %49.1, %11.7, %25 and %46.1, respectively. The unfair
competition was the most important business problem for the frms as 85.7% and this subject was the second
important problem for the frms as 14.3%. As a result, animal products processing companies in Diyarbakır have
operate with low capacity utilization rates and the main reason of this is determined as unfair competition between
companies.
